I am looking into possibly getting a Northern Inuit puppy, but I had a few questions first. My husband and I are currently dual military and stationed on Oahu, Hawaii. We will be separating from the military in October 2017 and moving back to the main land of USA.
Has anyone flown with a NI dog? At the time we move (assuming we get a puppy) it will be about a year or a year and half old. I've read that they don't do well when left alone so I am hesitant to fly on a 8ish hour flight with the dog checked. I don't want to cause the dog any anxiety or issues. I also want to ensure that the NI will be ok in the hot, humid climate of Oahu.
I'm also hesitant, because I have read that inexperienced dog owners should not get a NI dog. I haven't had a dog in about 10 years. My husband and I are both adventurous, active and love being outdoors, so I want an active dog that can hike and stuff with us. If I did get a NI I would attend some kind of professional training school with it and I feel like we are both up for the challenge of a difficult dog.
I was wondering if there are any NI dog owners that currently live on Oahu that we could meet up with sometime just to see/play with one of these dogs in person before we make the commitment.
Does anyone have any recommendations for us? Like we should wait until we move to the mainland before we get a NI or it would be ok to get one in Hawaii? Or if there are any other NI dog owners on Oahu we can meet up with if we get a puppy to socialize it with other NI?
I would also be open to the idea of taking in a rescue NI that needs a new home, as long as it is decently trained already.
If anyone has any information or is located on Oahu and will be willing to meet with me I can be reached via phone or text at 660-973-1862.
